Arakawa
Artist Shusaku Arakawa (1936 – 2010), in collaboration with his wife, the writer/philosopher Madeline Gins, has contributed significantly to the Post-Modernist project in art. They have melded physics, metaphysics, phenomenology, semiotics, philosophy and other disciplines to create a visual art form that examines human thought, language and perception, through projects such as The Mechanism of Meaning (first shown at the 1970 Venice Biennale), Ubiquitous Site * Nagi's Ryoangi * Architectural Body at the Nagi Museum of Contemporary Art, Japan, and a new park in Tokyo entitled Site of Reversible Destiny—Yoro. They work in many printmaking media as well as in filmmaking, video, sculpture, painting and architecture.
The Sharing of Nameless
The two Graphicstudio prints with the same title, The Sharing of Nameless, are similar but printed with different processes. One is a 6-color etching with blind embossing and the second is a lithograph/screenprint with blind embossing. Arakawa created works of aesthetic richness and penetrating analysis often dealing with the subject of mortality. Color, texture, text and graphics interact to create works of art that are both artistic and intellectual in their exploration of human awareness.
