Lesley Dill
New York artist Lesley Dill (b. 1950) is one of the most prominent American artists working at the intersection of language and fine art. Widely acclaimed for her sculptural, print and installation works that draw upon the poetry of another American woman artist, Emily Dickinson, Dill combines the word with the image, the fragile with the indestructible, the handmade with the computer-generated. A meeting of art and poetry, her works are rich in texture and temporal associations, evoking elusive, layered meanings.
Copper Poem Hands, We Look for Tracings, Woman with Word Crown, A Phrase Like a Lariat
Dill's residency at Graphicstudio yielded a number of innovative works serving up a twist on traditional printmaking. In Copper Poem Hands and We Look for Tracings the copper plates themselves, instead of paper impressions, are the prints.
Woman with Word Crown and A Phrase Like a Lariat take this a step further are plates in which the image is cut out of the copper. Delicate long and undulating threads suspended from the solid copper delineate the seeming fragility yet resounding effects of the spoken word.
In Copper Poem Hands the hands and the wire-strung letters, a poem fragment, are constructed from copper sheets that were then patinaed. This sculptural work features the text: “I felt my life with both hands To see if it was there."
Poem Dress of Circulation
Poem Dress of Circulation is a three-color lithograph assemblage that is hand stained and hand stitched blending printmaking, sculptural collage and poetry. The dress is made from Chiri Kozo paper which is reminiscent of commercial clothing patterns. A blue heart anchors the bodice while river-like veins of text trail down the skirt featuring the poem by Emily Dickinson, “The Heart has narrow Banks” (928).
The Heart has narrow Banks
It measures like the Sea
In Mighty – unremitting Bass
And Blue Monotony
Till Hurricane bisect
And as itself discerns
Its insufficient Area
The Heart convulsive learns
That Calm is but a Wall
Of unattempted Gauze
An instant’s Push demolishes
A Questioning-dissolves
