Markus Lüpertz
Markus Lüpertz was born in Bohemia in 1941, but his family moved to Germany soon after. He studied at the Academy in Düsseldorf and established himself as an artist in Berlin in 1962. Lüpertz directed the prestigious Art Academy in Düsseldorf from 1988 to 2009.
Abend #1, Abend #2, Abend #3
Lüpertz's paintings, prints and sculptures are distinguished by their figurative style, often locked in a rigorous geometry, his emotive colors and sensuously textured surfaces, of which Abend #1, Abend #2 and Abend #3 are good examples. This series of three intaglio prints use a variety of techniques. The raven, inspired by Manet's etchings for Poe's "The Raven," is executed in velvety aquatint. Lüpertz's deeply carved and ecstatically mobile drypoint lines provide contrapunto and activate the picture.
