Andrea Modica
Andrea Modica was born in 1960, in Brooklyn, NY and is an American photographer and professor of photography at Drexel University. Modica is known for her portrait photography and her use of platinum printing with an 8x10 large format camera.
Florida
Modica's folio of nine landscape photogravures, Florida, is an exquisite study in monotone of the 'other' Florida that exists beyond the sun, surf and tourist attractions. As a newcomer, she travelled by car through the back roads in west central Florida with her 8x10 inch view camera, and captured the characteristic strong light and lush vegetation that overwhelms the land and swallows up the leavings of civilization.
The historic photogravure process lends itself very well to these landscapes. Photogravure's subtle three-dimensionality, tonal range and capacity for detail infuse these breathtaking images with particular, sensuous life. Modica's images are anti-heroic, in the way the small details and the absences stand in for the monumental in our tradition of landscape photography.
