Lee Friedlander
Lee Friedlander (b. 1934) grew up in Washington and currently lives and works in New City, New York. His art centers on the American social landscape making humorous and poignant images among the chaos of city life or in dense natural landscapes, focusing on countless subjects ranging from cars, trees, monuments, and nudes.
In his early career in the 1950s-70s, Friedlander took his work to the streets photographing jazz musicians when he was in Los Angeles. Soon after moving to New York in the 60’s he began photographing recording artists such as John Coltrane and Ray Charles for album covers. Later, he would focus on depicting statues and monuments around the country. Today, his humorous and innovative photographs are held in the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, among others.
Photographs of Flowers
During his time at Graphicstudio, Friedlander created fifteen photographs of fragmented moments of contemporary life. Using images he had previously taken in Europe and America from 1972-1974, Friedlander chose to re-explore these subjects of trees, landscapes, gardens, monuments, and street scenes that continued to interest him. Mounted and housed in a blue fabric colored box, these images suggest a tension between their artificial environments and the natural world. As the first photographs to be published at Graphicstudio, a special dark room was fabricated especially for this project’s execution.
