John T. Scott (1940-2007) was an African-American sculptor, painter, printmaker and collagist. Scott's work frequently displayed themes related to African-American life, particularly the rich Afro-Caribbean culture and musical heritage of New Orleans. Scott's prints, paintings, and large-scale public sculptures are in many public and private collections around the country. Scott has been honored many times for his art and for his community involvement, notably with a MacArthur Genius Grant.
I REMEMBER BIRMINGHAM
John Scott's multi-dimensional work I Remember Birmingham is the recollection of a tragic event in American history, the 1963 race-related bombing of the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama, which resulted in four deaths.
To memorialize this needless loss of life, the artist has employed image and text, color and black and white, and two-dimensional and three-dimensional works. The glass blocks were etched by the Graphicstudio process heliorelief. Ink was applied to the surfaces of the block in order to make relief prints. Colored ink was then rubbed into the blocks to achieve a stained glass effect.
