Esterio Segura
Cuban-born artist Esterio Segura is a 1994 graduate of the prestigious Instituto Superior de Arte in Havana. Working in painting, sculpture and installation, Segura makes use of humorous imagery to address socially and politically charged themes from Cuban history. He has been exhibited extensively in Cuba, US, Germany, Spain, England, Argentina, Brazil and elsewhere in the world.
"Crowded with fantastic ideas and strong images, Segura's work resonates with the angst of the Cuban people. Yet it is resolved in such a poetic way that the resilient beauty and creativity of life on the island is made clear." (Kathy Zimmerer, 2002)
Submarine Homemade
Homemade Submarine SJXXII
At Graphicstudio, Segura created the visually humorous cyanotype Homemade Submarine SJXXII. The print depicts a schematic view of a submarine with the classic styling of a Jaguar MKII automobile. Each of the eight oars that propel the aquatic vehicle are labeled with a description of the crew member, such as “my self,” “the commander,” and “an old man.” After completing the cyanotype in 2017, Segura wanted to further realize a cast bronze sculpture of the same hybrid car submarine and is titled Submarine Homemade. The sculpture appears to be plunging towards the depths of the sea while the crew members continue to row.
TODOS QUISIERON VOLAR: HIBRIDO DE LIMO CHRYSLER NEW YORKER
Todos Quisieron volar: Hibrido de limo Chrysler New Yorker / Everyone would want to fly, Hybrid of Chrysler New Yorker limousine, combines various printmaking processes including drypoint, direct gravure text, screenprint, woodcut and embossing. The print is visually humorous as it depicts an aerial view of a black Chrysler with silver wings and is accompanied by satirical text.
TODOS QUISIERON VOLAR: HIBRIDO DE COLIBRÍ
Todos Quisieron volar: Hibrido de colibrí is a continuation of Segura's series addressing Cuba's isolation with travel and transportation prohibited from and to the island. The cast bronze sculpture depicts an airplane resembling a hummingbird drinking nectar from a tall blossoming plant.
